Give selflessly – with expectations.
My Wednesday Wish for You: Give Selflessly—with Expectations
Giving selflessly as a leader doesn’t mean giving without expectation. It means giving without expecting something for yourself. But it absolutely means expecting something because of what you give.
When we coach, mentor, or lead others, we pour in our time, attention, and expertise—not for applause, but because we believe in their potential. And that belief comes with hope and expectation: that they will grow, stretch, contribute, and move forward with new insight and confidence.
In a coaching or mentoring relationship, selfless giving shows up in listening well, asking better questions, and holding space for honest reflection. But it also includes expecting the person across from you to want something to be different—to apply what they’re learning. Otherwise, what are we doing?
In a boss/employee relationship, giving selflessly might mean offering grace, development opportunities, or resources to succeed. But it’s not a blank check. Expectations for performance, accountability, and deliverables are part of the deal. Giving isn’t passive—it’s powerful.
The romanticism of Servant Leadership often leans into humility and sacrifice. That matters. But liberation leadership—where people are empowered and activated—requires both support and challenge. If we only serve, people may feel good but stay stuck. When we pair our service with expectations, we give people the opportunity to rise.
My wish for you this week is to give selflessly—with high hopes and clear expectations. That’s where growth lives. That’s where real leadership shows up.
