Are you advocating for yourself and your fellow women?

Advocacy
In this installment of our series on the qualities of successful women leaders, generously shared by Jeff Klawsky, PhD, a Business Psychologist with over 30 years of experience, we explore a crucial aspect of leadership: Advocacy. Dr. Klawsky highlights that effective women leaders are not only skilled managers and innovators but also fervent advocates for other women in the workplace, actively working to foster a supportive and equitable environment.

Understanding and Education: The first quality that distinguishes these leaders is their deep understanding of the unique challenges women face in professional settings. These leaders go beyond their personal experiences by engaging in conversations with other respected women, reading extensively on gender issues, and seeking out data from credible sources. This comprehensive approach ensures that their advocacy is informed and nuanced, addressing the real and current challenges that women encounter in their careers.

Role Modeling: Secondly, these leaders strive to be the role model they wish they had encountered on their own paths. They embody fairness and inclusivity in their interactions, treating all colleagues equally regardless of gender or any other demographic characteristic. By doing so, they set a standard for behavior in their organizations, leading by example and inspiring others to follow their lead in promoting gender equality.

Dr. Klawsky encourages all of us to reflect on how we can enhance our role as advocates withthese thought-provoking questions:
– How can you broaden your understanding of the issues women face in the workplace? Consider diversifying the sources from which you learn about these challenges.
– Are there ways you can be a better role model for other women at work? Think about the values you wish to see more widely represented and how you can manifest them in your daily interactions and decision-making.

Advocacy by women leaders not only supports individual women but also cultivates a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture that benefits everyone. As we continue to discuss the qualities that contribute to the success of women leaders, let’s each consider how we can contribute to this important work, promoting an environment where all talents can thrive and prosper.
